On January 19, 2009, I headed to a department store near my home in Westchester County, NY, to find something to wear to an inaugural ball in Washington the following night. I had exactly one hour to shop between my children’s activities. Upon entering the eveningwear department I spotted several racks of beautiful gowns. “I’ll definitely find something here,” I predicted, and immediately set to work.

Over the last three decades, G-III Apparel Group has become a top US supplier of fashion outerwear, selling leather and cloth coats and jackets to Wal*Mart, Saks and 2,400 stores in between. Though sales are expected to grow 40% in the fiscal year ending January 31, to a record $715 million, earnings will be flat at best.
